Burnley Gymnastics Club was once again in the medals at the recent North West Two Piece Championships at Wigan Robin Park Arena.
The boys were taking party in only their second external competition which was organised by the North West Gymnastics Association at the regional competition venue.
In the Under 8s’ Level 1 competition, five boys made their competition debuts for the club, all narrowly missing out on taking a medal home at the highly-competitive event against some long standing men’s artistic clubs.
Special mention goes to Ewan Hawkins, who overcame some pre-competition nerves and was the highest overall scorer for the Burnley, putting in fine performances on floor and finishing joint fourth with teammate Lewis Glass.
Next up was previous Level 1 Lancashire champion Henry Sutcliffe who was now competing at Level 2. Not to be fazed by the step up, Henry narrowly missed out taking gold on vault but was delighted to take home the silver medal and finished fourth overall.
In the Under 10s’ Level 2 competition, Max Vlassis and Jack Thompson were up against some high level competitors. Jack narrowly missed out on a medal on vault, finishing fourth and ninth overall. Max put in two solid performances for fifth overall.
In the Under 12s’ Level 4, the highest standard competition on the day, Harvey Bretherton wowed the crowd with his fine array of skills, picking up a bronze on floor, which would have been gold but for a small technical fault.
He didn’t let that put him off, taking home silver on vault and a silver overall to cap a fine performance.
Boys’ head coach Zoltan Lang said: “The boys performed brilliantly and we were really proud of them considering we were more inexperienced compared to some of the clubs. The medals are a great reward for their hard work.”
