BURNLEY’S Uwais Majeed crashed out of the ABA Championships at Cedar Mount in Gorton, Manchester, despite a spirited comeback.
The 16-year-old struggled to make an impression on the bout in the first round against 2010 novice champion Dale Coyne, losing 10-1 on points.
But the Roche Amateur Boxing Club fighter, who scooped the North West’s up-and-coming young boxer award for his weight and age division, fought back with a vengeance. However, he lost the fight by a solitary point after the three rounds.
Coach Brian Roche said: “He did nothing in the first round. I told him he had to go all out to win the fight. The points went against him in that round and he lost the bout despite winning the second and third round.
“Uwais is a good boxer but Coyne is special. He’s a very good fighter and it’s a shame Uwais pulled him out of the hat in the preliminary rounds. It had been scored 10-1 after the first round so the damage had already been done but he fought back in style.”
