Burnley Bobcats swim squad competed in the first of three rounds of The National Arena Swimming League at Kendal after promotion last year.
The North West Arena League comprises of 54 teams, and this was Bobcats’ third season, after being promoted two years in succession, rising from the Minor League to Division 2 and now to Division 1, where 18 North West clubs compete.
Their opponents travelled from far and wide, with teams from Everton, Garston and Prescot in Merseyside, and Carnforth and Ulverston in the North. Bobcats knew the competition was going to be tough after promotion last year and were drawn against two recently relegated clubs from the Premier League in the first round draw.
Once again Bobcats swimmers all stepped up to the mark with some excellent swims, producing 32 podium places out of 50 races, 13 of those being first place with six relay wins in the boys’ 13/under and 15/under; the girls’ 15/under and ladies’ open teams.
There were also first place positions for seven individual swims from squad members Kerry Holding, Katie Rennolds, Erica Minozzi, Ben Edwards, Lily Duckworth, Ellie Taylor, Dean Moorhouse and Will Murray.
After all the events Ulverston took first place, with Carnforth second, followed by Bobcats in third place, with only four points separating them from Carnforth.
The final results being Ulverston 209, Carnforth 195, Bobcats 191, Everton 168, Prescot 154 and Garston 129.
It was a new experience for four young members to the squad - Lily Duckworth (10), Kerrie Gibbins (10), Adam Millington (10) and Tobias Pilkington (9), who all swam exceptionally well in their individual and team events.
The squad consisted of girls – Lily Duckworth, Anna Brown, Kerry Gibbins, Mia Sheridan, Saffron Fenton, Lucy Alexander, Ellie Taylor, Madison Beswick, Katie Rennolds, Erica Minozzi, Ella Sheridan, Charlotte Waddington, Lucy Cole and Kerry Holding.
The boys in action were - Alex Minozzi, Jack Chapman, Adam Millington, Tobias Pilkington, Robert Bryce, Elliot Norman, Harry Pilkington, Dean Moorhouse, William Beaven, Thomas Hamer, Jamie Sharpley, Ben Edwards, William Murray and Mike Robinson.
Head Coach, Mike Robinson said: “This was a great start to the Arena League and an excellent result after recent promotion to Division 1.”
