Burnley College’s Basketball Academy, Burnley Blaze, has continued its outstanding season by winning the National School Championship at the Nottingham Wildcats Arena.
The Blaze beat Ellesmere Port Catholic High School 113-70 in the final, with Extended Diploma in Sports Studies student Adrian Hodgers being named the Most Valuable Player, contributing 22 points.
Coach Malcolm Leak said: “We are delighted to add this trophy to our league title and third place finish in the national British Colleges Sport cup competition.
“The team’s hard work has been rewarded in all of the competitions we have entered this season and we are now looking to repeat our success next year.
“A number of our team will be progressing to university later this year, including to American universities to further their basketball careers, so we are preparing for the trials for next year’s Academy team and hope we will be joined by a number of the leading young basketball players from across East Lancashire.”
Sports Academy students are able to pursue their chosen sport while studying on one of the Ofsted graded outstanding academic programmes at the College’s Sixth Form Centre.
Students at the academies make full use of the high specification facilities at the Princess Way campus and also the facilities of professional clubs.
In addition to the Basketball Academy, Burnley College also runs Football, Netball and Golf academies.
