BURNLEY Basketball Club are looking forward to the MABL play-offs after a string of wins with both senior teams.
Ektio Burnley, playing in the Premiership Division, after a slow start, have gone from strength to strength, delivering what the coaches have been expecting with a well-organised, experienced team.
Burnley LT United, playing in the Second Division, were a little bit of an unknown quantity at the start of the season, but, thanks to the hard work of the coaching staff and players, they are comfortably in the play-off positions.
Michael Thompson, senior head coach at Burnley, said: “We have decided to have two teams this season to offer equal opportunities to all our senior players, and it is paying dividends.
“The players can train and play at their level and we don’t need to make any player rotations due to the high numbers.
“Last season the Premiership Division team had 15-16 players and we can only play with 12, and at times I was forced to choose which player to take at certain games and it wasn’t nice.
“This season, with two teams, we can make sure that everyone can play.
“It has been a little bit difficult to manage in terms of numbers of home games to organise, but all in all it has been a good decision.”
Giulio Minozzi, coach for Burnley LT United, added: “The process of creating a so-called second team has been rewarding because we have had the opportunity to integrate more players from different backgrounds.
“Senior basketball is more physical and intense than junior, and at times in the past, some of the junior players did not like to be immersed straight away in the Premiership team.
“Also for the younger juniors, they have now a point of reference where to go next, and we have a number of them already training with the second team, and by the end of the season I hope we will have a couple more.”
Meanwhile the junior teams have been playing a few friendlies with mixed results.
The Under 14 and Under 16s have recently played against Preston Pride and both teams came back with defeats.
