Burnley boxer Oathey is the top boy!

Oathey Jones

Oathey Jones

ROCHE ABC enjoyed a fantastic night of boxing at Byerden House recently, as the club’s youths took centre stage.

There were 12 fights on the night, with 11 Roche boxers in action, and six were victorious in front of a terrific crowd, including Hatton Boxing’s Ryan Burnett and Preston’s Suz Member.

National champion Oathey Jones made it eight wins from eight bouts as the 12-year-old 40-42kg national schoolboy title, beat 42-44kg champion Joseph MacMeechan of Shildon Boxing Club in the fight of the night.

And there was another fine performance from Rez Carter, 15, who beat Alan Stephenson, also of Shildon in his first fight, while Nicky Perry, 20, of Haslingden beat David Fishburn of Hartlepool.

Imran Zaman, 19, of Burnley beat Raz Mohammed of Fox ABC, Manchester and Young Cunliffe, 18, beat Salford fighter Kieron Ball.

Top of the bill contest, 21-year-old Owen Thomas, made it seven wins out of seven as he beat Thomas Brazell of Shildon, with the crowd on their feet.

However, Owais Majeed, 17, narrowly lost to Joe Cullen from Amir Khan’s Gloves gym in Bolton by one point, as did Liam Ormerod, 13, against Bayan Cahail of Bredbury and Stockport ABC, and Bria Fielding, 13, from Accrington, against Sadie Thomas from Hartlepool.

Also suffering marginal points defeats were Dean Thompson, 14 of Burnley to Jo Fox from Thameside and Billy Grogan, 14, who lost to Larches’ Matthew Patel.
