Sandygate Amateur Boxing Club’s Will “Bad Boy” Smith looking to keep his perfect season intact when he made the long journey to Congleton for the Beartown ABC show.
The 15-year-old took on the Potteries’ J.Bettaney (15, Hulton Abbey ABC) in a three two-minute round 65kg contest at Congleton Town Hall.
From the opening bell, Harle Syke’s Smith’s height advantage was apparent, making great use of his long reach, connecting well and with power as Bettaney soon realised he was in for a tough night.
The second was the Blessed Trinity Year 11 pupil’s finest, scoring with his rear hand, keeping his experienced foe on the back foot throughout, working in the clinches and phasing with his attacks.
The impressive Smith was coasting.
The third and final round left the judges ringside in no doubt as Smith continued to score with his lead, double rear hand combination, so it was to no surprise the Burnley youngster’s hand was raised the victor with a unanimous 3-0 decision.
Also on the night’s fight card were a couple of the Hargreaves Street club’s youngest prospects.
Show opener, Earby’s Keenan “Jerry” McGuire (10), made his ring debut in a skills bout against home town fighter K.Ward (10, Beartown ABC), followed by Nelson’s Hasan “Conquer” Khan (10) up against local D. Wright-Wilson (10, Beartown ABC), also competing in a skills contest, with all boys performing excellently in the non-verdict contests.
The show didn’t faze the local lads away from home against a vocal local support.
