Jonny Whitehead hit a dominant 60 as Lowerhouse beat Rishton in the Worsley Cup on Sunday

After a frustrating day at Rishton on Saturday – with one team keen to play and the other happy to collect three points – Lowerhouse returned on Sunday to record a convincing victory in the first round of the Worsley Cup.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Lowerhouse were out of the blocks quickly racing to 80-0 in just 13 overs.

Jonny Whitehead continued his good form with a dominant 60, but he was ably supported by his opening partner Joe Martin, who made 24.

‘House lost wickets in clusters, but posted a solid-looking 250-8, with further contributions from Paddy Martin and Chris Bleazard (37 each), Matt Walker (29) and skipper Charlie Cottam (13).

Matt Lambert (2-39), Danny Briggs (2-41) and Bradley Boddie (2-42) all collected a couple of wickets apiece for Rishton.

In reply, Rishton were on the back foot straight away, losing a wicket in the first over to the bowling of Walker.

This brought the impressive-looking Kelly Smutts to the crease. Smutts rode his luck, being dropped to a difficult chance off Walker, before eventually falling for 66, which contained a couple of lusty sixes and a number of fours.

Smutts was bowled by Paddy Martin, who returned figures of 3-32.

No Rishton amateur was able to stay with Smutts, with only Matt Leathert (24), Kegan Dobson (15) and Matt Nuttall (14) making double figures.

A couple of runs outs, plus impressive bowling from Walker (2-32), Halstead (1-16) and Bailey (1-17) restricted Rishton to 156.

Lowerhouse are at Bacup on Sunday.
