Rain hits hopes of any play at Towneley Golf Club

TORRENTIAL rain halted any hopes of play this weekend at Towneley Golf Club.

The Saturday competition was abandoned, before Sunday’s prestigious Municipal Cup and Rosebowl both fell foul of the weather and were postponed due to the deteriorating condition of the course.

The popular competition will now be played on September 23rd, with players asked to contact organiser Steve Bird on 424215 for times.

Earlier in the week, Andrew Miller was in tremendous form to win the Tuesday stableford.

The young Scotsman amassed 40 points to come top of the field, with Simon Smith taking runners-up spot a point adrift.

Steve Wilson won the Thursday event on the card from Gary Turner after both players totalled 37 points.

At Burnley last Thursday, the Sponsors’ Medal was won by Sue Kelly (108-35-73), from Elsie Thornber (108-35-73).

The Levens Brooch went to Susan Kelly (111-36-75) by a shot from Marilyn Chrimes (93-17-76).

The Lloyd Lewis Trophy, very generously sponsored by current captain Lloyd Lewis, this year becomes a major board competition.

And it was won by Deborah Horrocks (98-28-70), ahead of Elsie Thornber, whose 87-15-72 was the best gross.

Third was Maureen Barson (88-15-73) and Sue Kelly fourth (108-35-73).
