Junior golfers scoop top two spots

GOLF Rossendale Driving Range & Academy is celebrating after two of its Junior Academy members scooped 1st and 2nd place in a competition.

Sam Bailey and Kavan Heys took the top two spots in the Rossendale Junior Championship for youngsters with a higher handicap.

The boys have been members of Golf Rossendale’s Junior Academy programme for a year and have progressed through the ranks to the range’s elite development squad.

PGA Pro Mike Bardi said: “We are really proud of Sam and Kavan. They have worked really hard at their golf over the past year and their dedication has paid off. They have now got to a level where they can challenge in matches and will see their handicaps coming down.”

Golf Rossendale Driving Range & Academy is a registered Golf Roots centre and the Junior Academy now has around 60 members.

The driving range also takes golf into local schools so children who have never had the opportunity to pick up a golf club before get a taste of the sport.

And from September Accrington & Rossendale College’s new Golf Academy will be based at the range.

Golf Rossendale’s managing director Scott Grundy said: “We have only been open for just over 18 months and we have been really impressed with the standard of youngsters who have been coming to our Academy. Some of them are showing real promise despite never having played the game before.

“With golf becoming an Olympic sport for 2016, we really want to push our Junior Academy forward and encourage even more youngsters to give golf a try.”
