Burnley golfing round-up

BURNLEY Golf Club got off to a comprehensive win in this years Daily Mail competition last Sunday at Glen View.

They recorded a 5-0 drubbing of local club Whalley to progress to the second round. They will be hoping to go one better this year after losing in the National Final last year at worsely GC on a count back with a trip to El Rompido Spain in the Grand Final up for grabs.

Team captain Gary Blades (1) won 3&2, Andy Riley (2) won 3&1, Carl Parker (2) won 7&6, Ian Owens (2) won (6&4) and Matt Maguire (2) won 6&4. The draw for Round 2 will be at the end of February.

•Dave Sedgewick’s winter break in Spain certainly paid dividends when he returned to the cold weather at Towneley Golf Club and posted 42 points to win the latest round of the club’s Winter League. Runner up on the card was president Steve Wyatt with Simon Smith claiming third spot, a point adrift.

Nearest the Pin awrads went to Smith at the 6th and Rick Southern at the 17th The Previous round winner was Glynn Carlin on the card from veteran Alan Kelly and Dave Windle with all players scoring 43 points.

Assistant greenkeeper Neil jackson used course knowledge to win the Nearest the Pin at the 6th hole and newcomer Chris Uttley taking the plaudits at the 17th.
