PADIHAM came out on top of a nine goal thriller at the Arbories on Wednesday night, beating Squires Gate 5-4.

The visitors pressed early and took the lead after just three minutes when Jonathan Forbes volleyed home a loose ball from a corner.

Neil Stansfield levelled proceedings in the 20th minute after turning in a low cross from Sam Morris, and just under a quarter-of-an-hour later Joe Garvin put the Storks in front once Stansfield had threaded the midfielder through on goal.

Steve Wilkes’s side found some fortune with their third.

Andrew Tinker’s deflected effort deceived Squires Gate keeper Nathan Worrell and there was nothing he could do to prevent Padiham taking a 3-1 lead.

The second half started in identical fashion to the first and after only three minutes of play Chris Bennett halved the deficit.

The momentum was now with the Fylde coast outfit and on the hour mark Bennett scored again to make it 3-3.

The Storks regained the lead in the 65th minute when they broke with pace and precision from a Squires Gate set-piece before Ben Allen’s cross from the right was turned in to his own net by Joel Cummings.

And within a minute Padiham restored their two-goal advantage after Martin Broderick’s free-kick was converted by the head of Ben Allen.

The home side pushed for another goal but it was the visitors who struck when Peter Givin scored with a near post header in the 90th minute.

The final whistle brought an end to the goal scoring frenzy while three points catapulted Padiham into third place in the North West Counties Premier Division.

Padiham are at Stone Dominoes tomorrow, and at Barnoldswick on Tuesday.
