Pupils from Wellfield primary school took victory in girls’ football to seal their place at this year’s SPAR Lancashire School Games county finals.
The team from Wellfield competed against St Leonard’s in the Burnley district finals to finish in first place, and will progress to the School Games County Final on July 1st in Blackpool, where the pupils will compete against other footballers from across Lancashire.
The 2014 tournament was the largest yet with 18 schools and 180 children taking part.
This year, in a bid to raise the profile of the sport, the final was played at Turf Moor, where hundreds of spectators eagerly watched the event unfold, while the game drew extremely close results with a 3-3 score at full-time, as Wellfield emerged victorious after a tense penalty shoot-out.
Helen Tyson, Burnley School Games Organiser, said: “Well done to Leah Tulloch for her stand out performance in the final and congratulations to Wellfield on their win. I wish them the best of luck in the finals at Blackpool.”
