READ United put in a lackluster display as they came unstuck against bottom side Colne United.
The game was decided when Colne’s Gareth Hargreaves got his head to a long throw in to send the ball past Nick Galea midway through the first half.
Both teams played out a scrappy affair on a pitch that was in no way conducive to free flowing football.
Read had no creative spark throughout the game, huffing and puffing their way through the match with no end product.
Colne had more sights of goal in the early exchanges as Andy Bennett let off numerous potshots that goalkeeper Galea was more than equal to.
The breakthrough came when Read centre half Duncan Bennett misjudged a long throw in, leaving Hargreaves with a free header in a congested penalty area.
Colne deserved their lead, with Read practically camped in their own half going into the break.
Read took control of the game after the interval, Richard Wilson had a guilt edged chance to equalise, but got the ball stuck under his feet when clean through on goal.
Andy Bennett tried an audacious half volley that swerved and dipped just over the bar as the hosts looked to double their lead.
Read’s attempts to play football were thwarted by the home side, whose hunted the ball in packs, never giving any player a moments peace.
The Colne keeper made a smart save from Duane Knippet’s superb volley as Read were banging on the door.
With Read pushing forward, there was an inevitable vulnerability to a Colne counter, centre half pairing Bennett and Kirk Marsden were both booked for last ditch tackles.
The determination suffusing through Read for an equaliser was clear to see, culminating in last ditch penalty claim as Duncan Bennett was wrestled to floor as he was about to pull the trigger, with Wilson smashing the loose ball into orbit.
Read United manager Dale Tattersall said “We never got going today, it was a game of fine margins and unfortunately we couldn’t get back into it after falling behind.”
Read United travel to Rock Rovers on Saturday, kick off 2-15pm.
FINAL SCORE: Colne United 1, Read United 0
