Two gritty performances from Burnley Ladies proved insufficient to gain any points in their double header against Morecambe, the league champions-elect.
In the first match, Morecambe ran out 5-1 winners, a scoreline that betrayed the closeness of the encounter.
A misplaced clearance and slack defending allowed Morecambe to romp to a 2-0 advantage within the first 15 minutes.
But the Clarets settled and started to create chances.
Striker Danielle Cooper, latched onto a long ball through the centre of the Morecambe defence, her exquisite lob shaving the crossbar.
A superb turn, and cross, from Katie Pollard was punched onto the woodwork by the keeper.
The Clarets were rewarded shortly before the break, as a determined burst forward from winger Charlotte Hartley allowed Pollard to curl a left-foot shot into the roof of the net from 20 yards.
The decisive moment of the game occurred early in the second half when the referee detected a push and awarded Morecambe a penalty, duly converted, to give the league leaders a 3-1 advantage.
Burnley did not recover from this setback, despite a superb volley from youngster Grace Bullock that drew a full-length save from the keeper.
Two late goals from Morecambe produced a flattering final scoreline.
The second encounter descended into a bruising midfield battle with few chances.
Bullock had the ball in the Morecambe net midway through the first half, but she was denied by the off-side flag.
The only goal of the game arrived in the second half when Morecambe were awarded another controversial penalty, this time for handball.
The lady Clarets battled bravely and almost equalised when a Pollard header was tipped onto the bar by the Morecambe stopper.
On Sunday, Burnley Ladies entertain Chester City in their last game of the season, kick-off 2 p.m. at at Barden Sports and Athletics Club.
