Hameldon’s Year 7 football team finished as runners up to Blessed Trinity in the Burnley Schools’ 8-a-side tournament.
But they were desperately unlucky not to leave Shuttleworth as champions, having gone through the tournament unbeaten and without conceding a goal.
The first game saw the boys take on Sir John Thursby, and they won 1-0, playing some good football and creating lots of goal coring opportunities.
A brilliant free kick from Lewis McKecknie, which crept just inside the far post, proved the difference.
The second game was a very tight 0-0 draw against Unity, where both sides had opportunities to win the game, but defences held firm.
Hameldon then lined up against the hosts Shuttleworth, and in a game of very few chances, they snatched a 1-0 victory in the dying seconds thanks to a cool finish from Niall Sawley.
This brought a winner-takes-all game against Blesssed Trinity, both sides having come into the game with seven points from their first three games, and with the same goal difference.
It was another very tight game, which could have gone either way, but finished 0-0.
This left Hameldon and Blessed Trinity locked together with eight points and the same goal difference, meaning it was decided on the number of goals scored, with Blessed Trinity claiming the trophy by one goal!
Special mention must go to Alex Whittaker and Jordan Henderson for being the players of the tournament for Hameldon.
However, the whole squad were brilliant throughout, playing some nice football and playing the game with the correct attitude.
They left Shuttleworth so very close to winning the tournament, but still with the great achievement of being runners up.
The squad was: Reiko Rickwood, Alex Whittaker, Jack Hindle, Caine Hoyle, Jordan Henderson, Taylor Norwood, Lewis McKechnie, Niall Sawley and Dalton Link.
