Burnley pupil’s big shot

editorial image

BLESSED Trinity pupil Jake Ashworth has won a trial for the England futsal squad at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park.

Jake is a talented midfield player who started playing aged five for Fulledge Colts.

He was selected for the Lancashire futsal squad while playing for Ighten Leigh, and he now has the chance to make the step up into the national side.

Futsal is played between two teams of five players, one of whom is the goalkeeper.

Unlimited substitutions are permitted.

Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines, and walls or boards are not used.

Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular football.

The surface, ball and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique, as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.

If selected Jake will represent England in games around the world.
