IN the second of a two-part look at Burnley’s opponents - Peterborough United - Phil Smith reveals what qualities The Posh will offer at London Road tomorrow.
Part Two - The importance of a two-striker combination
What to expect this weekend? Goals!
Just three league fixtures into the new season and the London Road faithful have already been treated to 12 of them.
Northern Ireland international Grant McCann has worked the keeper more than anybody else in the Championship.
He will not be afraid to test Brian Jensen from any range.
The Beast will need to be on his toes.
The trio of Lee Tomlin, Paul Taylor and George Boyd will be alert to the possibility of the second ball.
Handling will be crucial
Jay Rodriguez and Charlie Austin had a disappointing afternoon against Middlesbrough.
They will be chomping at the bit to make amends tomorrow.
The understanding between the pair grows on a daily basis.
Fast and aggressive decoy runs are to be expected.
Their partnership is already into double figures this season.
As a rule of thumb we tend to see Rodriguez operating slightly behind Austin.
Tomorrow I would instruct the latter to feed Rodriguez.
His movement is unpredictable.
This needs to be harnessed and utilised. How? See Diagram A.
The importance of a two-striker combination is paramount. Austin must use his strength to facilitate the movement of Rodriguez.
Where can Burnley achieve success this weekend? That is the key question! I would look to attack Peterborough down their right side.
Lee Frecklington cannot be classed as a “chalk on boots winger”. He will rarely open himself up wide right. He will look to arrive behind Dean Marney and Chris McCann. Penetrating passes between our positions are to be expected. If our defensive unit is tight, he will free Mark Little to cross the ball into the penalty box.
When possession is lost, Frecklington and Little are unable to regain position quickly. Double exposure will be evident in transition. McCann will be the only block to our offensive transition.
At London Road it will be crucial for Kieran Trippier and Ross Wallace to keep position. This allows Burnley to stretch Peterborough. How? Instructing Rodriguez to shuffle to receive. The result? Genuine goal scoring opportunities for Austin(See Diagram B.
