Even after promotion had been confirmed, Sean Dyche’s poker face didn’t slip.

He doesn’t get carried away by either end of the football spectrum - triumph or disaster - but he was a very proud manager after his players sealed runners-up spot in the Championship, and a return to the Premier League.

He carried a broad smile, amid all the whooping and hollering, but admitted: “It’s internal celebration for me.

“Internally I can assure you I’m more delighted than you’d ever know.

“I’m extremely proud.

“The players have achieved so much, and there’s that pent up kind of anxiety of getting over the line when you’re so close.

“But I don’t get too high with the highs or too low with the lows.”

He was pleased to achieve promotion in front of the packed home areas at Turf Moor - the first time that has happened since 1973: “We wanted to take control of the situation. We didn’t want to have that one where you get over the line because someone else loses. We wanted to take care of business because we’ve had nothing given to us all season. We’ve had to earn the right every step of the way and we’ve earned it again with an absolutely fine performance.

“There was a lot of noise before the game about ‘Wigan are this, Wigan are that’ - they are a very good side, the group of players they’ve got is arguably the strongest group in the division, and I thought our performance warranted a victory.”
