While disappointed his goal wasn’t enough for all three points against Sheffield Wednesday, striker Sam Vokes insists it was another step in the right direction.

Burnley slipped to third in the Championship table after the 1-1 draw at Turf Moor on Saturday, replaced in the automatic promotion places by QPR.

Sean Dyche’s men are a point behind the Rs, and six behind leaders Leicester City, but with 20 games to play, the Clarets are in good shape as they enjoy a warm-weather training camp in Alicante.

Vokes put Burnley in front with his 13th goal of the season - bettering his best-ever haul of 12 with Bournemouth, only for Chris Maguire to equalise within two minutes.

And Vokes said: “It was good to get the goal, but it was a very frustrating game in the end, with conceding straight after the goal.

“But we’ve come away with another point on the way to where we want to go.

“You could say it’s two points dropped, or another one gained towards that promotion.

“But there’s a long way to go yet.”

Vokes is glad of the rest, however, after a gruelling schedule of fixtures came to an end with a physical match-up against Wednesday’s giant American international centre back Oguchi Onyewu: “There were a few issues on the pitch.

“Some of it’s part of the game, some of it’s not.

“The physical part of it is fine.

“It was a good challenge against two big centre halves.”

Vokes has become a marked man, with his strike partnership with Danny Ings the most prolific in the division, worth 34 goals between them, and the Wales international added: “Scoring another goal was good for myself and adds to my tally.

“It’s good to chip another one away into the partnership. Ingsy could have had a few, but there were some good saves from (Chris) Kirkland at the end.

“It was frustrating, and I think, looking back at it, the chances we had, we should probably have taken a few more.

“The goal they scored was even more frustrating because it was straight after.

“But it will be good to get together this week and get refreshed for the next 20 games.”
