The 18-year-old Australian admits that he’s receiving excellent tutelage from the senior members of the squad in his bid to make the grade at Turf Moor.

Club record signing Jeff Hendrick, Belgium international Steven Defour, weekend match-winner Scott Arfield and seasoned middle man Dean Marney have all helped to mould a Harvard standard educational programme on a football front.

O’Neill, who has made three substitute appearances for Sean Dyche’s side in the Premier League this term, said: “Learning from those guys is only going to help me improve and that’s the direction that I want to go in. I’m getting better every day.

“They’re very experienced, they know what’s happening, they read stuff a lot better so working alongside those guys is only going to help me develop in to a better player at the end of it. It’s been really good.

“They help me around the training ground and give me advice which is really good. They’re always trying to help me. It’s going really well. I’ll just keep ticking over and doing what I’m doing.

“In training they’ll tell me if I’m wrong, they’ll tell me if I should do this or do that, so it’s really good. If I do something good they’ll also tell me. It’s great that the bigger boys are helping me out.”

On the eve of a trip to Old Trafford, the club’s youngest professional identified the success of Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford which has heightened his hunger to make a first team start.

“He’s done really well and he’s playing with confidence,” he said. “He’s flying at the moment and anyone would want that sort of career.

“We’ll see what happens for me. I’m sure there’ll be an opportunity at some point but it’s up to me to prove myself until that opportunity comes.

“Hopefully we’ll play well and see what happens at Old Trafford. It’s a really good experience and hopefully I can keep it going.”

Asked about his hopes of representing his country one day on the international stage, O’Neill added: “I’m sure Australia will be in contact soon. We’ll see what happens and I’ll take it when it comes.”
