BURNLEY needed penalties to see off Plymouth after a late Robbie Williams penalty levelled things at Turf Moor.

Charlie Austin opened the scoring for Burnley after an underwhelming first half which came to life towards the end, when after good work from Marvin Bartley on the right saw his cross headed home by Charlie Austin.

It took until the 28th minute before Burnley registered their first effort on goal, an Alex MacDonald free kick hit straight at Plymouth keeper Jake Cole, which was easily handled by the stopper.

The game burst into life in the 37th minute, when after a lung bursting run from Bartley saw him deliver an inch perfect cross for the on rushing Austin, and the reliable striker made no mistake heading home from close range.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first, with lots of possesion football being played with very little goalmouth action, Plymouth's Conor Hourihane crafting the best of the Plymouth chances.

Burnley looked like they were going to play the game out and move comfortably into the next round of the Captial One cup, but referee Andrew Madley saw things differently, deeming Vokes to have fouled Paris Cowan-Hall.

Robbie Williams stepped up confidently and dispatched the penalty low and hard to Jensen's right to take the game into extra time.

After an uneventful 30 minutes, in which Burnley failed to create a chance of real danger, the tie was to be decided on penalties.

Brian Jensen was the Burnley saviour, saving three of the five Plymouth penalties, with Vokes, Hewitt and Stock converting their penalties to make sure Burnley progressed winning the shoot-out 3-2.
