The Whalley Road captain, who was Kyle O’Connor’s successor, stewarded the club to a one-wicket win over Moorside to set up a tie with Farnworth at Bridgeman Park on July 24th.

The competition’s path could’ve matched Read with former amateur Oliver Newby but his Westhoughton CC side were bypassed by their opposition from the Bolton Cricket League.

“It’s a very competitive cup and this is the furthest we’ve ever got,” said Marshall. “It’s nice to get a bit further in the cup competitions. This will give us the boost that we’ve needed.”

Read’s side of the draw would partner them with either Bury or Monton and Weaste CC in the final four while the victor of Lowerhouse and Burnley would take on Denton West or Ormskirk.

However, they have to negotiate a passage beyond Farnworth first, who are unbeaten this term.

“Farnworth will be a decent team with some paid amateurs in that league so we can expect a challenging game,” Marshall said. “It’s another opportunity for the players to give it their best.

“I’m delighted and proud to have made it to this stage of the competition with a young group of lads.

“Every individual within the squad is capable and we’ve shown our strengths as a group. This is where we want to be - you want to be challenging in the latter stages of competitions.

“It’s going to be hard work but ultimately you want to be playing and testing yourselves against the best.

“We want to challenge ourselves against the top teams. Hopefully we can achieve something that we can look back on with pride.”
