Burnley’s Jonathan set for dream day

BURNLEY-BORN cricket star Jonathan Clare could be treated to a real hometown reception after winning the LV County Championship Division 2 title with Derbyshire.

Jonathan and his teammates are expected to parade the trophy, the club’s first title since 1936, at Derby’s Pride Park Stadium on Saturday – the day the Clarets are in town.

And life-long Claret Jonathan said it would be a dream come true if he was able to celebrate his team’s historic accomplishment in front of his hometown’s fans.

“We don’t know if we are going to be parading it there yet but there has been an invitation,” said Jonathan. “I mentioned it to the club chairman the day we actually won the title. It would be incredible to parade the trophy in front of the Burnley fans.

“My girlfriend is going to be in the away end with three of my friends so it’d be great if it did happen.”

Derbyshire clinched the title with a six-wicket victory over Hampshire last Thursday. Although Jonathan didn’t play in the final game he has been involved in 11 league matches this season, contributing handsomely with both bat and ball.

“It was a shame not to play in the last match but I’ve played a lot this season. It was a very proud moment to win the title and the lads did a lot of celebrating afterwards.”

Jonathan’s mum Elaine, who works at the Turf Moor ticket office, was there on the day and said she was extremely proud.

“Me and his dad were there and we were thrilled to bits. It’s been a long time coming but they did really well.”

Asked whether he would be wearing his Burnley top should the team parade the trophy this weekend, Jonathan said: “I have thought about it but I’m not sure it would go down too well with the Derby fans.”
