PETERBOROUGH United boss Darren Ferguson knows his side face a huge task to stay in the Championship.
Having battled back from a half-time deficit to lead 2-1, Posh could have hung on and eased some of their relegation worries, but Martin Paterson earned the Clarets a share of the spoils with a typical poacher’s goal.
Ferhguson looked back at a result which did little to help his side and said: “We’ve put ourselves in a position where we have to win games so we can’t be happy with a point.
“We certainly won’t lack for commitment or character, but we do have to cut out the basic errors which have been costing us points all season.
“We cannot keep going home on a Saturday night saying ‘we should have won’.
“We have been guilty of far too many lapses of concentration this season and that is the reason why we are bottom of the table.”
Peterborough may have a game in hand on most of their relegation rivals.
But even if they were to mange to win that, they would still be three points adrift of safety with only a third of the season left to play.
And they will have to do better than they did against the Clarets where they were caught napping by a Charlie Austin strike in the first 90 seconds.
Ferguson added: “That start cost us the three points in my opinion. We got caught cold and it took us another 20/25 minutes to even get into the game.
“You can’t start any game that sloppily and expect to win games.
“In another season drawing at home to a side in the top eight after losing a goal in the first couple of minutes might be seen as a good point, but in the position we are in it’s not a good result.
“Because we lost the first seven games of the season we now have to win virtually every other game to have a chance of staying up, That’s why this was a vital match and when we did turn it around and take the lead I really felt we would go on and win.
“The substitutions worked well for us and I was pleased with the effort and attitude of the players in the second-half. They had a real go and our energy levels were what they should have been at the start.
“We couldn’t see the game out though and that was disappointing. Our concentration levels at the end of the match were poor again and that’s one of the main reasons why we are bottom of the table.”
