Having netted in games against Stade Nyonnais and Morecambe the 25-year-old club record signing added to his tally with a brace in three first half minutes against Stuart McCall's League One outfit.

After Filipe Morais dragged an effort wide of the upright from the edge of the box, capitalising on referee Geoff Eltringham's inadvertent assist when blocking Ashley Barnes's pass, last season's Championship top scorer got to work.

The opener was a result of great work between George Boyd and Stephen Ward down the left hand side with the former providing the cross for Gray to head home at the near post on the quarter-of-an-hour mark.

Moments later, the striker doubled the away side's advantage. Dean Marney had the vision from the edge of his own penalty area, the Bantams' high defensive line contributed to the incision, and Gray provided the precision when plucking the 50-yard pass out of the air and lifting the ball over City's £1 signing Colin Doyle.

And Sean Dyche's side were out of sight by the halfway point in the first half when Players' and Supporters' player of the year Ben Mee looped a header beyond former Blackpool stopper Doyle from David Jones's corner.

Gray was denied a penalty, and a potential shot at a hat-trick, when tripped by defender Nathan Clarke before Billy Clarke smashed an effort against the upright when finding space at the back post from Nicky Law's corner.

The hosts went close again on the half-hour with Paul Anderson missing the target with an acrobatic attempt once Clarke had headed Morais's delivery back across goal.

With time ticking down towards the interval, the home side continued to press as the Clarets took their foot off the gas slightly.

Billy Clarke's penetrative pass was perfect for Portuguese forward Morais to run on to but, as the former Chelsea youth player pulled the trigger, Marney recovered well to take the ball off his toe.

Boyd had a shot blocked in the closing stages of the half after Doyle foiled Scott Arfield from Gray's clever backheel

With Morais heading over from Clarke's lofted assist, Burnley's Barnes then left the field after pulling up when playing a pass. Lukas Jutkiewicz, his replacement, survived the remaining minutes of the half before being withdrawn at the break as Rouwen Hennings was introduced.

At that point the hosts did pull a goal back when Tom Heaton denied Billy Clarke only for Morais to fire in the rebound off the post.

Wholesale changes in the second half reduced the pace of the game though the Clarets were well in control, without having to step up through the gears.

Jones missed the target twice when getting a sight of goal from the edge of the box but Michael Kightly completed the scoring in the 80th minute, firing in to the net from close range as Bantams skipper Tony McMahon failed to deal with Dan Agyei's cross.

Teenage winger Josh Ginnelly was then denied a first professional goal for the club when racing on to Fredrik Ulvestad's cutting pass only to find Doyle too good.
