The 25-year-old club record signing netted twice in the final quarter-of-an-hour of the fixture after Liam Feeney had given the Trotters the lead.

And the striker returned to the Macron Stadium for the latest instalment of Burnley's preparations for the Premier League as he scored his fifth goal in four pre-season games.

After the stalemate against Morecambe at the Globe Arena, where the former Brentford frontman cancelled out Rhys Turner's opener, the £6m man spoke of his desire to find the net on every outing regardless of the game's importance.

Gray's latest offering may not hold the value of last season's double, but the striker is certainly developing an important habit ahead of his first ever term in the top flight.

Aside from goalkeeper Ben Amos stopping Michael Kightly's set-piece and Dan Agyei heading over the bar from a corner, the first 15 minutes in Horwich failed to animate the small crowd that had attended.

However, as soon as the visitors were able to get the ball in to the feet of Gray they were rewarded. Neither Neal Eardley or David Wheater were able to cope with the striker's fast feet, forcing the latter to commit the foul and gift the Clarets a penalty.

Gray's spot kick lacked any kind of run up but it certainly wasn't short of precision as he converted to the goalkeeper's right hand side, sending Amos the wrong way in the process.

Wanderers captain Jay Spearing went within a whisker of levelling proceedings when his troublesome free-kick was turned on to the crossbar by Tom Heaton but that proved the only moment of the first half where the England international was tested.

At the opposite end, as the friendly crept towards the interval, Gray was prevented from adding to his tally by the outstretched leg of Amos as he arrowed a left-footed drive towards the far corner.

The second half was in its embryonic stages when the hosts equalised. Eardley's pass helped Liam Trotter move goal side of Stephen Ward and, after the winger cut the ball back to the edge of the box, Spearing fired home off the upright.

Substitutes George Boyd and Chris Long had opportunities to restore Burnley's lead after working space inside the area but neither player was able to find a way past Amos' half-time replacement Mark Howard.

Matt Lowton also tried his luck from the edge of the penalty area but, once again, Howard was equal to the attempt. Up to that point the one-time Sheffield United stopper's intervention was relatively routine but he had to be at his best and react instinctively to deny Long with a fine one-handed save in the latter stages.

Max Clayton had the chance to win it for the home side just before referee Chris Kavanagh's final whistle but Paul Robinson turned the effort around his near post.

But with seconds remaining Turf Moor teenager Josh Ginnelly showed tremendous tenacity to win the ball back from Alex Finney, turn the defender, and fire the ball across Howard and in to the far corner to open his account for the club.
