MASKED raiders armed with sledge hammers left empty handed after trying to hold up a security cash van at a Simonstone garage this morning.
A police helicopter scoured the vicinity in Whalley Road in search of the would-be thieves who struck at the Select Convenience store at 8 a.m..

Police vans, detectives and police dogs from Clitheroe were deployed following the incident where it is believed two white men dressed in bomber jackets and wearing balaclavas attacked the guard driving the blue Securicor van. However, it was reported the guard managed to clamber back into the van, locking himself inside and consequently avoiding any injury.

Police cordoned off the forecourt of the shop, a Texaco petrol filling station, to investigate after a member of staff alerted them to the attempted robbery.

The offenders escaped in a Mercedes which was later found abandoned by police after an intensive search.

Investigations are still ongoing.
