Roman Catholic stance on contraception

I wish someone in the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic church, perhaps the Pope himself, could explain the church’s objections to contraception.

It is to emphasise the divine God-given grace of the creation of new life. Sex is for this purpose, not for the frivolous enjoyment of sexual indulgence. Catholics use contraception, following their conscience.

As an Anglican friend pointed out, doesn’t the church presume to control conscience? It all became very complicated.
