LETTER: Why spend a fortune on block paving?

CAN anyone tell me why it has been necessary to spend a fortune on block paving the footpaths near to Burnley College?

I was under the impression that both Burnley Council and Lancashire County Council were short of funds even for more important and urgent works.

How come then, money can be found for this needless work?

I would like to know how much of our money has been squandered on this work and why was it necessary in the first place? Surely not for the benefit of the college students as they tend to ignore the footpaths and simply wander aimlessly in the road even at the pedestrian crossing installed for their benefit.

I AM sorry to hear Mr Pilkington holds this view, however, Burnley is determined to invest in quality. It’s what the town, our students and residents deserve.

The creation of new pavements is only one aspect of the overall Princess Way public realm improvements. New walkways to improve access for students, the creation of a new public space, and improved lighting and landscaping will transform the area. The aim of the overall scheme is to attract new investment and jobs to the Knowledge Quarter which will incorporate the proposed five-acre employment site The Knowledge Park as well as the College and UCLan campus. The key to all of this is to invest in real quality and we are determined to do that.
