A fantastic seat of learning on our doorstep

University Technical College (s)
University Technical College (s)

Recently I was lucky enough to visit the new University Technical College (UTC) in Burnley.

I was amazed at the sheer transformation that had taken place from the old factories into the new college. It is most remarkable and worth every penny.

The college caters for up-and-coming apprentices with all the latest technology in engineering, business trades as well as departments for science, chemistry and physics.

I earned part of my apprenticeship in the early 1950s in the building next door called the Waterloo Foundry at Pembertons, who made looms and other textile machinery.

A far cry from the old methods of making machinery to the modern methods of today.

A boy or girl lucky enough to go to this college will benefit from its advantages in technology and as long as they are willing to learn then they are on the threshold of a new career in the future.

This college is an important feather in the caps of the people who made it possible and I must say, if I had my time to do it over again, I would be the first in the queue to enrol there.

I would like to say thank you to Mr Martin Callagher and all his staff for giving their time in inviting me there and showing me round this fantastic seat of learning.

Well done everyone concerned and good luck to you all in the future.

Mr B. Whittaker
