A BURNLEY woman who has been going to the same butchers for 31 years celebrated her 100th birthday with a commemorative sausage.

Mr George Heys, who has a shop in Lyndhurst Road, made the Jackson Five-Spice sausage for Mrs Freda Jackson. Mrs Jackson, who marks the milestone today, on Valentine’s Day, walks to the shop from her home nearby every week. She was presented with some of the sausages, a bouquet of flowers, card and Valentine’s balloon by shop staff.

Mrs Jackson will also celebrate her birthday by going out to lunch with her daughter Hazel (72). She regularly walks to her friends’ houses, helps to run the coffee bar at Central Methodist Church in Hargreaves Street and went swimming weekly until the age of 97.

The former dressmaker, who spent most of her working life at Margaret Stamper’s Ladies Outfitters, in Keirby Walk, said: “I think the sausage is a great idea. George has been telling me for years he was going to do it. I’m very lucky that I’m healthy like this. I like spicy things and I enjoy my food.”
