A GROUP of green-fingered students are set to work their magic on the plants around Burnley Central train station.

The youngsters, from Burnley College’s horticultural department, have formed the Friends of Burnley Central group to make sure the station is welcoming for passengers.

The partnership was set up when Northern Rail’s community ambassador for Brierfield, Sultana Jamil, realised a lot of students were using Burnley Central to get to college.

Students are being supported by the East Lancashire Community Rail Partnership, and Northern Rail has supplied planters and compost.

The young people’s work will form part of their coursework and be included in their final year results.

Eddie Fisher, community ambassador project manager for Northern Rail, said: “We know that more and more students are choosing to travel by train to get to college every day and we came up with a way to work in partnership with them.

“The students have been fantastic and also identified other areas around the station where they can lend their green-fingered skills to make it a more welcoming environment for Burnley passengers.”
