The son of a retired Burnley couple who escaped death in an horrific car crash in Turkey has revealed his family’s relief.
Mr Mike Speakman spoke to the Express from the town of Side in south-west Turkey where his parents Eric and Eileen are recovering after the car in which they were travelling flipped onto its side several times.
The couple, who own an apartment in the historic town, had been picked up at the airport by a neighbour when he swerved to avoid a motorcyclist causing the car to roll.
Mr and Mrs Speakman spent two days in intensive care after suffering broken ribs and other injuries. Mrs Speakman also suffered a damaged vertebrae and punctured lung.
Mike said: “My parents have been very lucky. The car looked an absolute mess after the accident, and it easily could have been much worse.
“They love Side and have an apartment there which they love to visit as much as possible. They had been back to Burnley for a few weeks in August but had just returned to Turkey when the accident happened.
“It must have been terrifying because the car flipped over several times and hit a petrol station sign. Obviously that could have been even more lethal. They have been very lucky.
“The driver and motorcyclist were even luckier as escaped pretty much scot-free. Dad is now out of hospital, but mum will probably be in for a few more days yet.
“The care they received in intensive care was second to none, but for the aftercare rehabilitation they are looking to come home.
“I think they will stay back in England before returning to Turkey in the spring.”
The couple are well-known in Padiham where they ran Eileen’s Off-Licence in Milton Street for 12 years.
Before that, Eileen (66) worked at Lambert Howarth, while Eric (65) worked as a die-caster.
