A TEENAGER stranded 30ft up on a church roof had to be rescued by firefighters last night.

The 14-year-old claimed to have gone up on St Cuthbert’s Church roof to retrieve a ball but froze with fear and could not get down.

The terrified teen’s friends called 999 and fire crews arrived on the scene at the Barbon Street church at around 9 p.m.

One firefighter had to climb up a 10m ladder to reach the stricken youth, reassure him and talk him down.

A spokesman for Burnley Fire Brigade said: “We do not recommend that people go climbing up on any roofs unless they are properly training and have the correct equipment – especially not children.

“If the boy had slipped it would have been a very serious incident. From that height you have had it.”
