A MEMORIAL service is set to be held to mark the 49th anniversary of the Hapton Valley Pit Disaster.

Nineteen men died and a further 22 were injured when an explosion tore through the No. 2 Union Seam at the colliery on March 22nd, 1962. It remains one of the town’s worst tragedies and family, friends and former colleagues of the miners killed that day will pay their respects at the Hapton Valley memorial stone in Burnley Cemetery today at noon.
