An Army Reservist from Burnley has been commended by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant at the annual Lord-Lieutenant’s Awards for Greater Manchester.

Pte Sam O’Donnell (27), who serves with Army Reserve unit 156 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, was awarded Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant’s Commendation in recognition of his exceptional commitment to supporting his fellow soldiers.

The presentation was made by Mr Warren Smith, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Greater Manchester, during a ceremony held at Gorton Monastery.

Sam, a self-employed IT consultant in his civilian life, joined the Army Reserve after serving as an Army Cadet when younger.

According to his superior officers he has proven to be an extremely capable soldier.

Sam has provided support to comrades facing difficulties outside of their duties, displaying maturity, care and compassion. He even opened his own home to accommodate a fellow solider in need.

Sam said: “I was shocked when I was told I was to receive this award, it was totally unexpected. I give my Reserve service a high priority and take as many opportunities as I can to take part in activities, but I never expected to be awarded like this.”
