Residents are being urged not to miss out on an 'early bird' discount when it comes to signing up for Burnley Council's chargeable garden waste collection service.

The deadline for benefitting from the discount runs out on Thursday, March 16th.

Sign up by then and residents who want to continue with fortnightly garden waste collections, after the chargeable service comes in from May 1st, will pay £25 rather than £30.

The cost covers 20 collections a year, with the usual break over winter.

Joanne Swift, the council's head of Streetscene, said: "So far more than 4,000 people have signed up to the new service. The deadline for the ‘early bird’ discount is fast approaching so why miss out? I’d encourage anyone who wants to continue with the garden waste collection service to sign up now.”

Unfortunately the council, like many other local authorities across the country, can no longer afford to provide the non-statutory service without introducing a charge.

The garden waste service will remain free of charge until the end of April.
