She said: “I am very pleased to be given the opportunity to serve on the opposition front bench. There is nothing more important than the health and well being of our people and I am keen to work with a committed team dedicated to holding the Government to account on all aspects of the NHS.”

Mrs Cooper has had a long standing interest in community health, spending a number of years before becoming an MP running a local pharmacy with her husband in Burnley.

In her new role Julie will be shadowing David Mowat MP, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Community Health and Care.

Her new responsibilities will be wide ranging and include everything to do with pharmacy, dentistry, dementia, primary care and some areas of adult social care.
