FIRE-FIGHTERS spent two hours tackling a blaze at a former Burnley mortuary.

A fire broke out in the disused building in Salus Street, next to the old Burnley Victoria Hospital, at 9-15 p.m. last night.

An aerial ladder platform was used to get the blaze under control after it spread to the roof of the single-storey building.

Crew manager Tony Spencer said: “We believe the fire was started deliberately and the police are investigating. There have been reports of youths messing around in the area.

“It was quite a big fire and was difficult to get to once it spread to the roof which is why we had to use the aerial ladder platform from Accrington. We think it was being used to store bits of furniture but apart from that there was nothing else really damaged.”
