Letters to the Editor
LETTER: Trying to trace Rosie
I am trying to find Rosie Winter (her maiden name) for a promise I made to a friend, her late brother, who lived in Canada.
LETTER: Take part in National Doughnut Week for charity
National Doughnut Week is approaching and I would like to make a special appeal to independent craft bakers, food retailers and coffee shops across the UK to get involved in this fun, annual charity event, which takes place from 11th-18th May, in aid of The Children’s Trust.
LETTER: Lancashire County Council must have money to burn
The new Pelican-style traffic lights in Padiham are massively expensive and hold up both pedestrians and traffic.
LETTER: Trees festooned with poop scoop bags
I totally agree with Edward Lee’s comments re “poop scooping”.
1 commentLETTER: Burnley wake-boarding plan is ill-conceived
The planning application for the wakeboard venture on Rowley Lake has been submitted and it is apparent how ill-conceived it is.
LETTER: Mark Kitto band memories!
After being on holiday for nearly two months, I started to catch up on back issues of the Colne Times and was surprised to see the photo of Mark Kitto and his band.
LETTER: What a load of bull in animal welfare debate
Having read Justin Kerswell’s column on March 8th on animal welfare and the British farmer, I have never heard such a load of bull and untruths in all my life. Has he ever been on a farm in his life?
LETTER: Colne looks like a refuse tip and dogs’latrine at times
I was pleased to read of Sandra Fernandezes’ satisfaction about living here in the Colne Times. I moved to Colne 10 years ago and agree with her as to the friendly helpfulness of the town’s folk and those living in the surrounding villages.
LETTER: Ants crawling around hospital toilets
I had the misfortune to break my elbow last week and ended up in the fracture clinic at Burnley General Hospital. To my horror there were ants crawling around the ladies’ toilets.
LETTER: Plea to farmers around Pendle
As someone who loves the countryside around Pendle may I make this plea to farmers and, in particular, those who rent pasture for grazing.
LETTER: Public opposed to badger cull
The badger cull is due to start sometime after June 1st in Gloucestershire and Somerset.
LETTER: One person every five minutes will suffer a stroke
Earlier this month Baroness Thatcher passed away after suffering a stroke. She was just one of the 150,000 people who have a stroke each year in the UK – that’s a shocking one person every five minutes. In fact stroke is the third biggest killer in the UK.
LETTER: Time to improve health and safty in the workplace
Last year, 173 people were killed and 111,000 were injured in workplaces across the UK. We think just one death is one too many, so these figures are a real concern.
LETTER: Animal Aid says thanks for your cash
Animal Aid would like to thank the people of Burnley for their generosity in raising £226 at a street collection on April 6th.
LETTER: Focus on winners and losers, not good of society
Mr Hind (Letters, April 18th) very eloquently states his case for Mrs Thatcher and the continuation of Thatcherism, as practised by that other well known admirer, disciple and some might say war-monger, Tony Blair and the somewhat inferior version of him, now leading the Conservative party, David Cameron.
LETTER: Ted Carter ... great CRGS teacher
Thanks for your excellent tribute to Ted Carter, teacher at CRGS.
LETTER: Use council tax cash to give us facts, not political rhetoric
The lead article on the council tax freeze in the spring edition of Ribble Valley News reads more like a Conservative Party election leaflet than impartial, factual news from the council.
LETTER: More power to the people in Whalley Community Hydro plan
It is saddening to see Whalley Community Hydro plan to launch their shares with such a high entry price of £250. This sum, which must be regarded as risk capital, may be more than many people in the area can spare, resulting in only the “better off” participating.
LETTER: Burnley MP should get his facts straight over funding
I feel I must respond to your article “MP and Council Leader clash over fund aid” on Friday, April 12th. I did not realise I had clashed with Gordon Birtwistle MP on this issue. What is really going on here is that he is trying to manufacture a story for his political purposes.
LETTER: Charities’ wasteful overkill
Many charities now raise funds by collecting things to sell in their shops. I am in favour of people’s unwanted goods being sold for charity rather than being thrown away but, the collection process seems to have become a free-for-all.
LETTER: 446 civil service jobs lost each day
Ahead of unemployment figures, new research from UNION, the public sector union, reveals 446 jobs have been lost from councils and from the police across the UK everyday since the coalition came to power.
LETTER: 20mph sign is a complete waste of time
Perhaps someone from the Lancashire County Council could reply to my letter in your paper.
1 commentLETTER: Dementia care non-existent in hospital
This is a reply to the article released in March with reference to dementia care at Airedale Hospital, in particular ward 1 (I think!).
LETTER: Pupil happiness should play important role in ‘education’
It was with some sadness I read your recent front-page headline and article regarding the “damning” Ofsted report for Lowerhouse Junior School.
LETTER:School run is causing traffic chaos
It was interesting to read your comments in “Viewpoint” regarding the roadworks at the Gannow Top junction and, in particular, your observation that while driving into work when the schools were on holiday was a real pleasure. (Express, Friday, April 12th) .
LETTER: The new-look Burnley Express
I like the new Burnley Express, the use of colour without being garish.
1 commentLETTER: We expect a council leader to fight for us
I couldn’t believe what I was reading in the Burnley Express regarding “MP and council leader clash over fund aid.” As a councillor voted in by the people of Burnley, and then voted in by her peers to be the Leader of Burnley Council, I cannot get my head around the fact Julie Cooper is not fighting tooth and nail for any funding that could come Burnley’s way.
1 commentLETTER: Small Business Saturday could help our shopkeepers
I read with great interest the article written by Mr Brian Hobbs in the Express, Friday, March 29th. Mr Hobbs is President of Burnley and District Chamber of Trade, a body which I worked with when I held the appropriate portfolio at Burnley Council.
LETTER: Burnley FC fans are proud of Jay Rodriguez
I think I speak for many Clarets fans who are happy about the rave reviews “one of our own” Jay Rodriguez is getting at the moment.
