News that the county’s police force is at breaking point even before more swingeing cuts are introduced will hardly help residents sleep safely in their beds at night.

More than 700 staff have been lost from Lancashire’s force in the last five years and we are really starting to feel the effects.

Fear of crime remains high on most people’s list of concerns and axing even more resources does not go down well.

I for one would be willing to pay a bit more council tax to preserve staffing levels and keep as many bobbies on the beat as possible.
