The other week I attended an event I have really been looking forward to.

I visited our new £9m. Emergency Unit at the hospital. It is not quite finished, with the new unit opening in January, but I was delighted to see it includes 13 high-tech consulting cubicles, a Children’s Injury Unit, a fracture facility linked to the X-Ray unit in the hospital.

There is also an Ear Nose and Throat unit, an ambulance base, a doctors’ out-of-hours service, staffed with an A&E consultant and, on the second floor, will be the new Rainbow centre for children with special development difficulties and needs.

I was also told about the two new operating theatres that have just opened. I am delighted at this real progress in delivering services back to Burney Hospital that were so crudely taken away four years ago.

Earlier that week, I visited Tottenham Hotspur to discuss their apprenticeship scheme. They have a fantastic set up where they train young people to go into the community to work in local schools.

I also attended the council meeting back in Burnley which was a fractious meeting when discussing the Glebe Street recreational facility.

Following the outrageous comments about Burnley in the Economist a few weeks ago, I was visited by Russian TV and showed them our new UTC and wonderful town.

I then attended a Lancashire Enterprise Partnership dinner where we discussed future capital investment, Burnley Bridge and Michelin site which will create employment opportunities in Burnley.

I met Brian Tomlinson and some of his friends who donated a £300 cheque for the Scanner Appeal. They generously donated this money and I fully appreciate this and all the work they did with their community group in our town.

I also watched on Sunday as elderly residents also embarked on a 14-mile walk and did amazingly well to complete it and raise £700 for the scanner appeal.
