Olympic Torch draws near

THE countdown is on as the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Burnley draws nearer.

On Saturday, June 23rd at just after 11am the torch relay will begin its procession through the town. The first torchbearer is expected to start running along Accrington Road at 11-05am and the torch will then pass down Westway, Trafalgar Street, Sandygate, St James’s Street, and through the town centre to Place De Vitry, then up to Manchester Road, where it will leave the town.

A total of 13 torchbearers will carry the flame through the town, giving residents and visitors a once in a lifetime experience.

Coun. John Harbour, Executive member for Leisure and Culture for Burnley Council, said: “The excitement of the torch relay is building daily across the UK, and we are thrilled that it is visiting Burnley on its epic journey.

“We have a fun-filled morning planned, with a variety of events taking place to ensure it’s a day to remember.

“The website is being constantly updated with news of activities so please use it to plan your day www.burnley.gov.uk/olympics.”

The public are being encouraged to play a more active part in the games themselves, by signing up to the WE PLAY online community, where people can post comments and upload photos.
