VIDEO: Water main burst sends 100ft fountain into skies above Burnley

A 100ft water jet has shot into the sky above Burnley this morning after a digger ruptured a main water pipe.

Workmen looked on in amazement as the fountain of water gushed out of the ground on the Towneley Gardens building site.

Neighbours came out of their homes to watch the spectacular leak which could be seen for miles.

United Utilities workers are on site trying to tackle the burst main and residents fear their water supplies could be hit.

A spokesman for United Utilities said: “The main was damaged by workmen on a building site. Our engineers are on site working out the best way to isolate the burst. We have to take into account the impact on water supplies in the area.

“Some people will have discoloured water and poor water pressure as a result. The engineers are looking at whether they can re-route water to people who are normally fed from that main.”
