Specialist rope rescue fire-fighters from St Anne’s and Darwen were called in to help lift a horse which had become trapped in its stable in the early hours of this morning.

Large animal rescue teams from Nelson and Darwen Fire Stations were called out at 1-42am to the stable in Woodend Road after reports of a horse having fallen and become trapped.

The complex rescue operation took around three hours with the specialist Rope Access Team from St Anne’s also attending with additional heavy lifting equipment.

A local vet was also called out to monitor the horse’s wellbeing as it was eventually removed from the stable and helped to its feet where it was given time to come round from the effects of a sedative.
