AN ASTONISHED dog owner was celebrating after his prized pet gave birth to a perfect 10 puppies.
Jamie Moorhouse, of Mary Towneley Fold, was only expecting his Dogue de Bordeaux Zana’s first litter to be small.
But Jamie and his wife Lyndsay were amazed when the three-year-old bitch had a clutch of 10 healthy pups.
New mum Zana, also known as a French Mastiff, had given birth to 13 babies, but three sadly failed to survive.
However, Jamie, who is a builder, was over the moon with the new arrivals.
He said: “It is a really big number to have on her first litter and she is a very small size for a bitch. So to have 10 healthy puppies is something very special.
“We had read up on it and we were only expecting her to have three or four so she tripled that. We were amazed.”
Zana went into labour early on Sunday night and the puppies just kept coming until 3 a.m. in the morning.
“They just kept coming and coming,” said Jamie. “When the eighth one came out we were liked ‘oh my God’ and then another came out and another. They just kept coming. We couldn’t believe it.
“It was the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and she gave birth to 10 puppies. It is a nice story to remember on such a horrible day.”
The two proud pet owners say they have now got their work cut out with the extra-large litter and they are on hand all times of night and day to help mum Zana.
“We have to get up every two hours in the night to make sure they are getting a feed. It is going to be a full time job. But we just feel really lucky.”
Jamie says he will sell nine of the litter and keep one of the puppies which he says he will give a name in honour of 9/11.
