A group of young people from Padiham have transformed a disused room in their youth centre into a gym.
Around 20 youngsters aged between 12 and 18 cleared, cleaned, decorated and installed fitness equipment at Padiham Youth Centre in Burnley Road.
Thirteen of them volunteered for more than 10 hours and will be awarded a qualification.
Centre manager Dean Rainford said: “It was just an old storage room with cupboards and it was run down. We were having a meeting with the young people and asked them what they wanted in the centre. They came up with the idea of having a fitness room where they could keep fit.
“We had a look round the building and this storage room was the perfect size.”
The group soon got to work clearing the space and dismantling old furniture. They then chose a colour scheme and decorated the room and sanded the floor before putting in the new equipment, which was funded with a £1,050 grant from Blackburn-based New Ground Together.
Dean added: “They’ve done a fantastic job. At first we didn’t know if it was going to work because it needed a lot of time spending on it. But they all turned up when they said they were going to do. We’re now looking at our next project.”
