Nelson Royal British Legion Welfare Officer Michael Sutcliff has been preseented with the Pingat Jasa Medal.

Mr Sutcliff, of Kibble Grove, Brierfield, has been awarded by the Malysian Government in recognition of the support to Malaya in the 1950s and 1960s as the Communists were trying to overthrow the Government.

Many British, Australian and New Zealand troops were involved sadly with many casualties.

He was presented with the medal along with other ex-servicemen from the North West at the Imperial War Museum Manchester by the Malaysian Military Attache, Brigadier General Othman.

Unusually the Queen has agreed that this medal can and should be worn by all ex-service personnel who have been awarded it, because normally medals awarded by foreign governments are not worn.

Mr Sutcliff was a Royal Navy sailor and spent in total over four years in the area of dispute from 1961 to 1968.
