A group of travellers have again moved on to a popular recreation ground in Burnley.

The travellers, with around six caravans, moved on to Hargher Clough Rec, off Cog Lane, last weekend – the same spot where a large group moved two years ago.

Then, around 30 caravans and vehicles moved on to the site, owned by Burnley Borough Council, and eventually had to be evicted following a court order.

Angry residents at the time accused Burnley Council of leaving the site open following a funfair but council bosses insisted a padlocked gate had been illegally cut open.

There have been no reports of trouble emanating from the site this week but on Thursday Burnley Council sought a court order to move the travellers on.

A spokesman for the council said: “We are aware of the travellers and will seek a court order to remove them, backed by the force of law, if necessary.”
